NYS Lawmakers OK 25 MPH Speed Limit For NYC

25mphNew York state lawmakers have voted to let New York City lower its citywide speed limit to 25 miles per hour.

The state Assembly approved the city’s request late Thursday and the Senate followed suit early Friday morning as the Legislature worked to adjourn their six-month session.

The city’s speed limit is now 30 miles per hour. Mayor Bill de Blasio had sought the state’s permission to lower it by 5 miles per hour as part of a traffic safety campaign.

Traffic deaths have fallen sharply from 701 in 1990 to 286 last year, but de Blasio has proposed several measures to reduce the number further, including speed cameras, tougher penalties on reckless motorists and reduced speed zones.

The measure now goes to Gov. Andrew Cuomo for his signature.

  1. That’s utter lunacy! !

If Herr Shoyta DeBlabla wants to h have zero deaths, the best way to do it would be to make the speed limit ZERO!

  2. Cars going only 30 MPH aren’t the problem, it is speeding that causes the danger. This is just to be able to make the penalties higher and to be able to issue more tickets to more people.

I am sure his motorcade isn’t crawling around town under 25 mph.

  3. bh more traffic in nyc…
instead of focusing police on minor traffic infractions, why not unhook their handcuffs and allow them to do their real jobs, such as stop and frisk. this is why im voting for phil goldfeder!!!!!
