One of the conditions to the inclusion of the radical left-wing Meretz Party in the now-forming coalition is the dismissal of controversial Justice Minister Daniel Friedman.
During recent talks between premier-designate Tzipi Livni and Meretz leaders Chaim Oron and Zahava Gal-On, it is being reported that Livni is not planning to dismiss Friedman and is unwilling to entertain such a move as a precondition to Meretz entering the coalition.
She indicated that she does not plan to discuss the matter, stating, “You cannot tell me who to appoint.”
Meretz is seeking an increased budgetary allocation for social and welfare issues, but Livni is indicating an unwillingness to expand or stray from the budget, stating during these uncertain times, such a move would be irresponsible.
Livni is holding talks on two tracks, with party leaders as well as with representatives. She plans to appoint Kadima MK Tzachi Hanegbi her advisor during the negotiating period.
