Retired IDF major-general and a former national security advisor, Giora Eiland spoke with Israel Radio regarding Operation Brothers Return on Tuesday morning, 19 Sivan 5774.
Eiland explained there are numerous aspects of the operation and the reality surrounding the kidnapping of the Israeli youths. He feels the intelligence information signaling the hostages are still in the Hebron area is reliable and that is why the search continues to focus on that area. Eiland added however that one cannot forget the reality that the terrorists had eight hours until the IDF began operating and this provided an ample window of opportunity to bring the captives to Jordan, Egypt or Gaza.
Eiland feels that the fact there has not been credible acceptance of responsibility for the kidnapping or demands from terrorists signals the government is acting correctly by acting on the premise the boys are alive. He added that one must realize however that with each passing hour and day, the chances they remain alive diminish.
The former senior official points out there are three welcome consequences of the kidnapping as today’s reality permits Israeli forces to make the sweep through PA (Palestinian Authority) areas and arrest Hamas members and commanders. Secondly, the reality of the situation is placing considerable strain on the deal between Hamas and Fatah, and lastly, there is an increased awareness among the international community regarding Israel’s realization it cannot rely on anyone for its security other than its own forces and capabilities.
