Deri Petitions the Court to Clear the Path for Jerusalem Mayoral Race

Aryeh Deri on Tuesday petitioned the Jerusalem District Court seeking to lift the ‘moral turpitude’ stain on his record that stands between him and possibly becoming the next mayor of Jerusalem.

After Justice Eliezer Rivlin in his capacity as head of the Central Election Committee refused to issue a ruling in the case, Deri turned to attorney Tzvi Agmon, who is arguing that when Deri was sentenced, the moral turpitude stain was for a five-year period. Seeking to keep him out of the political arena, his political nemesis, the late Tommy Lapid, led the battle to extend it to seven. He succeeded, but Deri is arguing it should not impact him since at the time of his sentencing, it was five.

In all likelihood, the Deri mayoral issue will eventually find its way in the Supreme Court since his opponents have already announced if the district court clears the path for his candidacy, they will appeal.
