A development group that wanted to build a casino in the Catskills is dropping out, saying the possibility of a competing casino closer to New York City would make their proposal unsustainable.
Trading Cove and the Stockbridge-Munsee Community of Wisconsin say Thursday they will not bid for a gaming license in the Sullivan County town of Thompson. The developers say the possibility of a casino in neighboring Orange County would dilute the market.
Thompson Supervisor William Rieber says an Orange County casino could make it harder for the remaining three Sullivan County proposals to get financing.
There are 18 groups vying for four licenses that will be granted in the Albany-Saratoga area, the Southern Tier-Finger Lakes region and the Catskills and mid-Hudson Valley.
Applicants must submit proposals by June 30.

Too bad…it would have been a good addition to Sullivan county and provided some entry level jobs for young men and women with limited job skills. Also would have provided an option for motzi Shabbos entertainment during the summer (Have you ever seen how many guys in chassidish or yeshivish lvush in Atlantic City motzi Shabbos?)
1. Just because, ” Have you ever seen how many guys in chassidish or yeshivish lvush in Atlantic City motzi Shabbos?,” doesn’t make gambling muttar. It’s still assur and one who does most types of gambling would be considered pasul l’aydus.
That being said I know the natives up there are royally upset at some full page ads, sponsored by inzir mentshin, that appeared in their papers against the casinos. Our people fail to understand that these locals have to survive winter and not just the 10 weeks of our intrusion.
Ah, the voice of a Gadol. Yes, what a pity. What a lost opportunity of avoiding Shuk Shel…
