Olmert to Announce his Resignation to the Cabinet on Sunday

olmert 3.jpgPrime Minister Ehud Olmert at Sunday’s weekly cabinet meeting is expected to announce he plans to resign as promised, following Kadima’s election of a new party leader. Olmert may present President Shimon Peres with his resignation on Sunday, prior to the president’s departure for NYC, where he will be attending the UN General Assembly. If this does not take place, he will most likely not submit his resignation until after Rosh Hashanah. Kadima leader Tzipi Livni has called on Olmert to keep his word and resign immediately.

Once he has the resignation in hand, the president must select someone to begin efforts towards forming a new coalition, a task that is expected to go to Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, the newly-elected Kadima Party leader. If she is given the mandate for forming the government on Monday, she will have until 03 November to present her coalition.

If Livni is unsuccessful, Olmert is likely to head the transition government until following elections.
