Montreal, Canada: Protest Against Bobov Shul Expansion

Dozens of people were out protesting this afternoon in the Plateau district, CJAD reports.

They’re protesting the expansion of a Bobov Shul on Hutchison street.

The Plateau borough council recently approved a 400-thousand dollar project to renovate and expand the 60-year-old Shul, which belongs to Bobov.

Some locals say it will bring more traffic and increase long-standing friction with the Hasidic community — others are carrying signs reading, ‘no to favoritism.’

One member of the sect is quoted as saying, if he survived the Holocaust, he’ll survive a group of angry Plateau residents.

  1. The important information missing from the article is the ethnicity of the protesters. If these are secular Jews, it is to be expected. If they are French Canadians, it is a seriously anti-semitic incident.

For secular Jews, the growth of Yiddishkeit is a cancer destroying their culture. They have spent 200+ creating a mitsvah-free alternative to a Torah-based lifestyle, and the growth of the frum community is a repudiation of their work.

For the French Canadians, Hasidim, especially ones for whom English is a foreign language, pose no threat, so their opposition can be presumed to be more dangerous.

  2. akuperma, i live in montreal… its the french canadians.

Secular ashkenazis, sepharadim, lubavitch, litvish and hasidim (bobov, vishnitz, belz, satmar) all live in different neighborhoods. The hasidic community is the only kahal that live in the midst of the french canadians…i mean it, you’ll have a hasid living side by side with goyim. Hasidim live around bernard street which is Culture Central when it comes to Cafes and Restaurants… many proud seperatist live in that are and do see the hasidim as thorns and frankly hasidim dont give two cents about them either ( i wouldnt either).

Surprisingly enough, other kehilots, religious or not) dont live with the french at all and live side by side with their own kind. Most doors in Cote Saint Luc (for example) have mezuzot

    GALUT!

  3. It is the French-Canadians, so no need to propagate lashon harah on other jews for no reason. The Plateau chassidim have little contact with the secular jews, who live in a totally separate area.
Gabs911, you pointed out something very interesting that i never realized – the secular jews in montreal are more ghetto-ized than the chassidim. In my opinion, the chassidim should pick themselves up and move to cote-st-luc, where its free of french-canadians, and far away from the extremely non-kosher establishments on Parc Avenue. Furthermore, the seculars can only benefit from the exposure to more frum jews. I believe the Munkatcher dayan did move to CSL a while back, but unfortunately he was not followed, and went back… oh well.
