Friedrich Merz, Germany’s New Chancellor, Reaffirms Strong Support for Israel and Jewish Community

Newly elected German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU/CSU coalition, is wasting no time in demonstrating his unwavering support for Israel and Germany’s Jewish community. Following his victory in the 2025 German elections, Merz has emerged as a staunch ally of the Jewish state, reaffirming Germany’s historical responsibility to stand with Israel and combat antisemitism.

Merz’s commitment to Israel’s security and well-being is not new. In October 2024, he played a key role in pressuring the German government to resume arms deliveries to Israel, a move that reinforced his belief that Germany has a moral and strategic obligation to support the Jewish state. His advocacy for Israel has been widely welcomed by Israeli officials and Jewish leaders alike.

Following the CDU/CSU’s electoral triumph, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally congratulated Merz, calling him a reliable partner in strengthening the long-standing Germany-Israel relationship.

“Germany and Israel share a deep and enduring partnership,” Netanyahu said. “I look forward to working with Chancellor Merz to further strengthen our friendship.”

Beyond his pro-Israel stance, Merz has actively championed the fight against antisemitism and the protection of Jewish life in Germany. His close relationship with Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal, the Rabbi of Berlin, highlights his dedication to fostering a strong bond with Germany’s Jewish community.

One of the symbolic traditions Merz has embraced is the annual menorah-lighting ceremony at the CDU headquarters during Chanukah, a ritual Rabbi Teichtal initiated years ago. Merz personally participated in the ceremony last year, delivering heartfelt holiday greetings to Germany’s Jewish citizens and reaffirming his commitment to combating antisemitism.

Merz’s rise to Germany’s highest office signals a continuation of strong bilateral ties with Israel and a firm stance against antisemitism within Germany. His policies are expected to further bolster cooperation with Israel in defense, diplomacy, and trade, while also ensuring that Germany remains a safe and welcoming home for its Jewish population.

As he prepares to take office, his past actions and steadfast commitment suggest that both Israel and Germany’s Jewish community have a dedicated and vocal advocate in Berlin.
