Jewish Cemetery in Salonika Attacked


gMatzeivos in a Jewish cemetery in the Greek city of Salonika were vandalized, the daily Post Chadashot reports. According to local police, the anti-Semitic attack occurred just days after the neo-Nazi party in Greece registered a victory in the European Parliament elections.

During the predawn hours on Thursday morning 29 Iyar 5774 the vases and ornaments of 12 kevarim were smashed and damaged. The vandals reportedly tried smashing the matzeivos too, but damage was limited as they did not succeed. Local Jewish leader David Shaltiel condemned the attack, insisting it was an isolated incident and not connected to the EU Parliament election.

Greek Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos stated “Authorities will do everything possible to apprehend those responsible for the anti-Semitic attack which is contrary to our democratic values of tolerance”.
