Sullivan County Sheriff Michael Schiff has officially launched his reelection campaign, announcing his bid before a packed crowd of approximately 80 supporters at Albella’s Restaurant in Monticello.
Schiff, who has served as sheriff for 19 years, highlighted his administration’s successes and innovations, crediting much of the department’s achievements to the dedicated men and women under his command. He emphasized key initiatives, including the highly successful Youth Division, which operates School Resource and DARE programs in local schools. He also spoke about the establishment of the Emergency Services Unit and the acquisition of the BearCat armored vehicle for handling high-risk situations.
Under Schiff’s leadership, the Sheriff’s Office has embraced new technologies, such as the Drone Program, to enhance operational effectiveness. He also prioritized increased training for deputies and a return to basic policing strategies, such as foot patrols in the county’s hamlets and villages. Additionally, he praised the hard work of deputies in the Jail Division, Civil Division, and security teams responsible for maintaining safety in public buildings.
Schiff has played a prominent role in the Jewish community, working closely with Hatzolah and summer camps, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Jewish community has overwhelmingly thrown their support behind Schiff during his previous elections, and this time is expected to be no different. In fact, since his last election, there are thousands of additional Jewish residents living in Sullivan County year round. All are expected to vote for Schiff. With a proved track record of being there for the community 24/7, Schiff is expected to receive more votes than ever.
In a major boost to his reelection bid, the Police Benevolent Association (PBA) of the New York State Troopers, Inc., the largest police union in New York outside of NYC, has endorsed Schiff for the sixth consecutive time since he retired as a state trooper in 2005.
“I appreciate the vote of confidence,” Schiff said. “I have worked closely with the union since my first term as sheriff and intend to continue that collaboration.”
In its endorsement letter, the Troopers PBA commended Schiff for fostering strong working relationships among law enforcement agencies and ensuring the safety of Sullivan County residents. The union, which represents more than 6,000 current and former state police members, expressed confidence in Schiff’s leadership and commitment to public safety.
With a strong record and key endorsements, Schiff’s campaign is poised to be a competitive race as he seeks another term in office.
