A platoon training sergeant assigned to the Nachal Brigade was sentenced to a 21-day prison sentence after he found a new and original method of hazing his recruits.
While traveling on Highway-1, the Jerusalem – Tel Aviv Highway, he ordered his recruits to change from their dress uniforms to daily uniforms ten times, compelling them to be exposed in a compromising fashion to motorists traveling on the highway. He also ordered them to clean their weapons while performing exercises.
The soldiers were indeed naïve, unaware that such treatment is forbidden in the army and therefore, they did not complain. During discussions with officers on their base however they mentioned the events in passing, leading to an investigation.
Base commander Lt.-Colonel Shai Barkat sent the sergeant to 21 days in prison for his unacceptable actions. He also decided the sergeant had ended his career in a leadership capacity, ruling he is unsuited for such tasks.
