While Israel announced it is halting its nationwide gas mask distribution program after experts conducted a risk assessment, masks have been purchased for foreign diplomats stationed in Israel. This information was reported to the Knesset Foreign Affairs & Defense Committee by Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman. Taking part in the high-level meeting were representatives from the IDF, National Security Council, Public Security Ministry and the National Emergency Authority.
The discussion centered on Foreign Ministry’s preparedness for a state of emergency. Committee Chairman (Shas) MK Amnon Cohen expressed concerns of a Foreign Ministry strike during an emergency, pointing to the recent strike that brought many essential diplomatic services to a grinding halt.
Ministry officials assured those present that the ministry conducts emergency drills twice annually and despite the fact that one-third of the ministry’s personnel changes annually, the ministry stands ready for any eventuality.
