The cabinet on Sunday, 18 Iyar 5774 approved the so-called Cornflakes Bill as expected. The bill will permit the import of “non sensitive” foods such as grains, pasta, cookies, crackers, cereals, rice and legumes intended to drive down the price of these items by introducing competition into the marketplace.
The bill calls for adopting the European Union standard for imports. At present, the stringencies and bureaucracy surrounding receipt of an import permit for such items has prevented companies from doing so. Under the new bill importing will be easier and far less expensive.
The government backs accepting the EU standard to facilitate and encourage imports in to the country. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, the non sensitive food imports account for one half of all food imports, which reaches $4.3 billion annually.

Given the still-socialist nature of the economy, having the government import foods for the “general” consumer, will result in much high costs for kosher consumers. Given the nature of government enterprises, they won’t like competition for those wanting kosher crackers and cereals.
Again, please state in your title which country you are referring to(Israeli cabinet),so it need not be guessed halfway through the article. Thank you
