Defense Minister Ehud Barak last week approved the delivery of 1,000 Kalashnikov AK-47 assault rifles along with 10,000 bullets for PA (Palestinian Authority) security forces operating under Fatah control in Yehuda and Shomron.

He also approved the opening of an additional 20 police stations in area “B”, areas that are classified by Oslo under Israeli security and PA (Palestinian Authority) civil control. Despite the areas being under Israeli security control, the defense minister explains the weapons will assist the forces in maintaining law and order. He did not detail why they require automatic weapons to accomplish this police task.
