A police officer was hit by a van on Park Avenue as he was chasing a suspect who had escaped from custody early Wednesday afternoon, authorities say.
The officer was struck by the commuter van near East 120th Street, a block from the precinct. He was in stable condition.

Authorities say the officer was taking the prisoner to Manhattan Central Booking. It was not immediately clear how the prisoner escaped.

The prisoner was captured nearby.
