The Supreme Court on Wednesday afternoon, 14 Iyar 5774 ordered security forces to continue with the planned destruction of Maale Rechavam, located in eastern Gush Etzion.
Residents attempted a last minute legal appeal to block the destruction of their homes. They presented the court with paperwork proving their ownership of the controversial land but the court rejected their effort and instructed IDF and border police troops to continue. The court-ordered deadline for carrying out the expulsion is Sunday, Lag B’Omer.
A large force of security troops arrived at the community earlier in the day as they prepared to raze the structures. In the eyes of the Supreme Court the buildings were constructed on private Arab land. Dozens of Jewish youths waited for security forces in the hope of delaying their arrival. Their effort was symbolic at best as the size of the heavily equipped force made it clear to all that the destruction was going to take place with or without cooperation.
Gush Etzion Regional Council leader David Pearl called the destruction of homes “an expression of weakness and frailty regarding our hold of Eretz Yisrael but we will not flinch and we will not be silent – we will continue to build and expand Gush Etzion in every area”.
Security forces are preventing members of the press from accessing the area so they cannot photograph the destruction in progress.
The spokesman for the courts released a statement to the media that there was no order given to freeze the evictions despite reports to the contrary earlier in the day.

The sickest part of it all is that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of illegal Arab buildings which are left intact. Netanyahu is a weak paper tiger who kowtows to the west.
To yacr85 regardless of whatever unfavorable things the soldiers of the idf may have to do they still serve to protect the residents of Israel and to undermine that is very disrespectful towards their noble work. Let me remind you that people in the same uniform only two months ago intercepted a boost from Iran loaded with rockets aimed at Israel.
