A blind Egyptian sheik serving life for his conviction in a plot to blow up New York landmarks has been moved to a prison medical facility.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons website says Omar Abdel-Rahman has moved from the “Supermax” federal prison in Florence, Colorado, to the Butner Federal Medical Center in North Carolina.
Abdel-Rahman is serving life after his 1995 conviction in a plot to blow up five New York City landmarks and to assassinate Egypt’s then-president.
New York attorney Stanley Cohen says one of Abdel-Rahman’s sons asked him to find out about his medical issues. In the past, the 76-year-old sheik has suffered from diabetes and heart issues.
A prisons spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.
