The number of New Yorkers struck and killed by cars so far this year has dropped by a third compared to the same time last year.
New York City Police Department statistics published in the Daily News show 40 pedestrians were killed by cars between January 1st and this past Sunday.
Sixty people were killed during the same period in 2013.
The number of pedestrians injured by cars also fell eight percent.
NYPD Chief Thomas Chan tells the News police are handing out more tickets as part of Mayor de Blasio’s “Vision Zero” plan to end traffic deaths.
The number of drivers ticketed for failing to yield has soared 115 percent.
Speeding tickets are up 15 percent, and tickets for driving with a suspended license or no license are up 24 percent.
DWI arrests are also up six percent.

Maybe Mayor de Blasio knows what he is doing. Or, maybe the horrendous weather of the first quarter of 2014 kept pedestrians off the streets and sidewalks, and out of harm’s way.
