Driver Charged, Released in White House Incident

whiA Maryland man who police say drove behind a motorcade carrying President Barack Obama’s daughters and through the White House gates has been released after appearing in court.

Bill Miller, a spokesman for Superior Court of the District of Columbia, says 55-year-old Mathew Goldstein of Mitchellville was charged with unlawful entry, a misdemeanor, after Tuesday’s incident. He was released on his own recognizance Wednesday. Another hearing is set for May 21.

Goldstein was ordered to stay away from the White House and its grounds.

According to online charging documents, Goldstein was closely following the last car in a Secret Service motorcade Tuesday afternoon.

The documents say Goldstein drove through a gate and past a large “do not enter” sign onto a restricted part of the White House grounds.
