Tensions High After Kiryas Joel Board Meeting

kjThe following is s News 12 article:

Dozens gathered in the Town of Monroe on Monday to continue the fight over 500 acres of land.

During the town board meeting, residents asked United Monroe leader Emily Convers questions about their ongoing concerns after the state postponed its decision as to who will be the lead agency to oversee the Hasidic community of Kiryas Joel’s expansion plans.

Later in the night, a town resident was removed from the meeting while Supervisor Harley Doles was announcing his support of Pat Coppola as candidate for town council.

Amid the controversy, Doles also announced Town Attorney Jim Galvin’s resignation, citing a conflict of interest and Convers’ involvement in Monroe Village government.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says a decision on who will oversee the land deal could come as early as next week. Doles says the DEC “is taking extra effort to make sure it’s done right and I applaud their efforts.”
