4:23PM EST: U.S. stocks fell for a second day as a slump in commodity producers overshadowed gains in airlines and consumer companies after Hurricane Gustav spared drilling platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, sending oil to a five-month low.
The S&P 500 Index fell 5.3 points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,277.53. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 26.63 points, or 0.2 percent, to 11,516.92 after earlier rallying almost 247 points. The Nasdaq Composite Index slid 18.28, or 0.8 percent, to 2,349.24.
