For Noam and Aviva Shalit, the birthday event which attracted hundreds of neighbors to their Mitzpei Hila home on Thursday evening was not festive, but quite the opposite. They appear to be maintaining hope however, using the event to launch a new campaign under the banner “Gilad is Still Alive,” fearing the nation may slowly be forgetting Gilad, now in his third year in Hamas captivity. Thursday was the soldier’s 22nd birthday, his third in Hamas captivity.
Aviva addressed the event, explaining “I did not prepare a cake, I did not blow up balloons, I did not arrange flowers, did not buy a ift and I did not ponder what would Gilad want. I however requested one thing, ‘Giladi, remain string as you know how.”
Noam told reporters, “It appears that at present, it is advantageous to both sides to push off the difficult decisions.”
Karnit Goldwasser, the widow of Ehud Goldwasser HY”D added, “A birthday is a special event but for you, it is another day, another day alone, another day in the dark… with the hope that one more day and you will be home.
Soldiers who served with Gilad held a vigil outside the Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv, and from there, they marched to Rabin Square where another birthday event was held for Gilad.
