The New York City Department of Transportation launched a major street safety initiative in an effort to reduce traffic-related deaths.
According to the DOT, someone in NYC is killed from a traffic accident every 30 hours.
Police officers, local elected officials, along with members of the DOT gathered on Atlantic Avenue near Washington and Underhill avenues Wednesday to announce the first step in their vision zero plan.
Atlantic Avenue will be the first of 25 arterial roads that will become slow zones. Part of the plan will be to post new speed signs reducing the speed from 30 to 25 mph.
The DOT says the new speed limit signs will be up by the end of the month.
