Israel: Channel 10 Election Poll

voteA Channel 10 TV poll shows that if former Likud Minister Moshe Kahlon returns to politics and launches his own party he will earn 10 seats. Kahlon, whose name is synonymous with fighting for the working class and weaker social economic classes, left the political arena 18 months ago at the height of popularity, after destroying the stranglehold of the cellular telephone companies.

Shas, which currently has 11 seats drops to 7. Likud, which today has 31 seats earns two additional mandates and remains in the lead with 33. Interestingly, if Kahlon returns he will not hurt Likud, but this poll shows he will draw seats from other parties.

Following are the poll results:

Likud/Beitenu: 33 (31)

Labor: 14 (15)

Bayit Yehudi: 13 (12)

Yesh Atid: 12 (19)

Kahlon: 10 (–)

Shas: 7 (11)

Yahadut Hatorah: 7 (7)

The Movement: 4 (6)

Yisrael Beitenu: 5 (if it decides to run independent of Likud)

  1. Israeli polling is highly inaccurate both due to the nature of proportional representation (slight shifts in votes produce large changes in seats), and since the hareidim, Arabs and to a lesser extent sefardim don’t participate or participate but try to give the “correct” answer based on the pollster’s perceived bias.

  2. 1. Likut-Beiteinu + HaBayit HaYehudi + Kahlon = 55+ seats.
    2. Arab parties = 10-11 seats.
    3. The Movement is teetering on the edge of the new election threshold (%3.25) and may well fail to pass it.

The oft-repeated ‘threat’ of charedi MKs that they will form a Left-Charedi coalition seems more unlikely then ever.
