Minister Approves Importing 6,000 Tons of Potatoes to Israel


potaFinance Minister Yair Lapid on Sunday, 6 Nissan 5774 signed an order permitting importation of 5,000-11,000 tons of potatoes without having to pay customs. Farmers report a significant shortage this year due to difficult weather conditions.

The approval comes as potato sales climb significantly ahead of the upcoming yomtov of Pesach, a main staple for frum Ashkenazi shoppers.

  1. Tariffs on imports of unprocessed food? That’s barbaric. Reminds one of England’s infamous corn laws in the 19th century (whcih today would be prosecutable as a crime against humanity).

  2. Akupermna, remember this is Israel, where being a control freak is a sure sign that you are at home. Of course it is ridiculous to have tariffs and import quotas on unprocessed foods but who cares so long as I can take charge and get bribed for favoring you!
