Police announced Sunday night that they have a suspect in custody in connection with a fire that left two NYPD officers in critical condition on Coney Island.
The fire was investigated as ‘suspicious’, and police confirm that it started by a burning mattress in the hallway.
It took two police officers 44 seconds to respond to a fire that broke out in the 13th floor of a Coney Island high rise apartment. However, in their race to get to the scene, they put their own lives terribly at risk.
The FDNY received the initial call for the fire in the 18-story building at 2007 Surf Avenue just before 12:30 on Sunday.
Officer Rosa Rodriguez, 36, and Officer Dennis Guerra, 38, responded, and went up the elevator to the 13th floor, where they were overcome with smoke.
“As that elevator door opened, they were overcome with smoke that was in the hallway, and were on the floor of the hallway when FDNY got there,” said Police Commissioner William Bratton.
Firefighters later located both officers unconscious and unresponsive on the floor of the hall of the 13th floor. The officers were brought back down the elevator and were treated outside the building.
Rodriguez was taken to Lutheran Medical Center where she was stabilized and was later transported to Cornell Medical Center.
Guerra was resuscitated in the field, stabilized at Coney Island Hospital and then airlifted to Jacobi Medical Center, where he is currently being treated.
