Syrian President Assad Shopping in Russia

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad arrived in Russia on Wednesday armed with a shopping list of advanced weapons, weapons which Israel fears will transferred to Hizbullah as Damascus continues arming the Lebanese-based terrorist organization.

Russia seems happy to comply at present, angered at Israel’s assistance to Georgia following Russia’s recent invasion. Israel sent a medical team and supplies, and continues to assist following the Russian attack.

According to Russian media reports, the Kremlin has offered to deploy advanced Russian surface-to-surface ballistic missiles in Syria as well as advanced radar systems. Russia is offering the SS-26 missile, which replaces the Scud. The missile is capable of carrying a non-conventional warhead.

Perhaps on a calming note, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev telephoned Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Wednesday. The two reportedly discussed a number of issues, including improved relations between the countries.
