Israel Prison Authority officials are planning the construction of a state-of-the art 12-story prison which will replace the Massiyahu, Ayalon and N’vei Tirzah Prisons. The new facility will be constructed in Ramle.
Other tower prisons are also planned in the future in the northern and southern districts as well. The cost of the planned structure is NIS 1 billion. Prison authority officials explain that eventually, the three towers will replace the numerous outdates prisons around the country.
Each floor will be divided into two wings, and then subdivided into three. There will be large outdoor areas on each floor, permitting prisoners fresh air and their daily walk without moving to another level. There will also be factories that will provide employment for thousands of prisoners. The two-tower structure will be capable of housing 5,000 inmates.
Moving to the state-of-the-art system will result in the dismissal of 300 prison officers since the new complex will not demand the same manpower as the current older facilities.
Israel Prison Authority Chief Benny Keniak stated that in 11 years, the new structures will have paid for themselves in savings.
