YWN EDITORIAL: WHERE IS CHUCK “SHOMER YISROEL” SCHUMER – AS AMERICANS ARE STRANDED IN ISRAEL

Israel finds itself in its most precarious situations in decades. Not since the Yom Kippur war has the entire State of Israel been put in harms way with the country under constant threat of being barraged with missiles by Hamas and Hezbollah.

The support from prominent American voices like President Joe Biden and numerous bipartisan lawmakers in Congress, is crucial at this hour, and is deeply appreciated by the citizens of Israel, Jewish communities across the world, and lovers of peace and stability around the globe.

But that brings us to the relative absence of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Self-described as a “Shomer Yisroel,” Chuck has long been a fierce advocate for the Jewish State in Washington’s halls of power. But now, with thousands of fear-stricken Americans stranded in Israel, we have barely heard a word from him relating to how – or even if – he is working to help secure emergency flights out of Israel for U.S. citizens.

The State Department has been awfully unhelpful thus far. While numerous countries have already begun evacuating their citizens, the U.S. has seemingly dragged its feet and provided literally worthless guidance to Americans in the country.

On Wednesday morning, the State Department appeared to show how out-of-touch it is regarding the dire situation for those stranded. In a release, it reiterated its call to those who are stuck in Israel to register their names on a designated form. But then it stated, “We remind you that Ben Gurion is operating and flights out of the country are available. We urge you to consider departing Israel.”

Is the State Department living under a rock? Thousands of Americans have been unsuccessfully trying to purchase tickets for flights out of the country for days! Nearly every major international airline has cancelled all flights to and from Israel, leaving potential flyers with practically no options. What help is it to advise citizens who are desperately trying to leave, that they should leave?

With that in mind, the “Shomer Yisroel” in the Senate must step up to the plate and become more involved in the disaster that is unfolding in Israel. Senator Schumer should be working night and day to ensure the safe travel of the many Americans – thousands of whom are his own constituents.

It is not enough to be labeled a Shomer Yisroel. Titles and labels are nice, but without earning them, they are as worthless as Wednesday morning’s State Department advisory.

  1. Nah, come on. It’s much more important to take care of the poor downtrodden illegal migrant bums. White American taxpaying citizens come last.

  2. I don’t know if this was written by someone being truthful as there are some “holes” in this article (For example: how could the writer refer to someone being the shomer yisroel? The Shomer Yisroel is Hakodosh Baruch Hu)

  3. Stop being an alarmist. I personally know loads of people that returned yesterday and today by flying through Spain and Greece. Let’s focus on the real צרה which is our nation living as a sheep among 70 wolves רח”ל.

  4. Don’t worry about Chuck Shmucker, were in the good hands of the Agudah, who will help us out in this pressing matter, with their many connections to the government and lobbying power, like they have done many times before!

  5. SchnitzelBigot is obviously correct. Has everyone who’s rushing to leave considered whether they can do something helpful and useful there instead?

  6. yeshivaguy45,

Useless Chuck has bragged in the past that he’s the “shomer yisrael” and that Hashem actually gave him that name.

  7. To shniizelbigot
What does one thing have to do with the other? There are people that have families. Jobs, school and have to get back home.

  8. if we compare this situation with biden’s fiasco in kabul just 2 years ago, we can see that: it’s better to be organized than to have people falling from the wheels of a c-17, and the americans in israel are not in immediate danger, as the idf has successfully countered hamas’ attacks.

just imagine the agony that chuck schumer must be going through – for a politician to miss a photo op must be excruciating.

  9. There is a lot of hype going on here. Even with the vast number of flights that have been cancelled there are flights leaving Ben Gurion all day. No one needs to be stranded. It may cost more to buy a ticket now, and you may need to fly through a smaller European city and make a connection there or through there to the USA and even spend half a day there waiting for your connection, but that is not the same as being stranded. If you only fly Business or at worst when there is no other option, Premium Econonmy, you yes admittedly have a problem, but it is of your making. Hey, didn’t anyone tell you Jews were slaughtered by terrorists in cold blood in Israel and the consequences of this may inconvenience you?

  10. I’ve said this many times. Chuck Schumer is a cheap political hack who only looks out for himself. He’s as phony as a $3 bill.

  11. Schumer left just before the attack on a trip to China with several Republican and Democratic Senators. He actually was helpful in pushing the Chinese government to issue a statement condemning the attack while urging protection of civilians versus what would have been read as a considerably more one-sided pro-Hamas position. His group cancelled the remainder of their meetings and left China this AM and is on its way back to DC

  12. @BaisIsThePlace,
your welcome to go there if you want, but according to our torah that is not really what should be done right now, sorry.

  13. Some of the comments are dumber then dumb.

Shumer calls himself the shomer yisroel, hence the headline.

People who have the ability are traveling in circles around europe finding a way home. Not everyone has that ability.

To gadolhadorah, China statement means nothing. The only value Shumer has to Jews is to help Jews. China statement didn’t, doesn’t and won’t help jews in any way or fasion. Hashem didn’t give him the name Shomer. His name is Schumer. Not the same any where.

It may only be an inconvenience to you, but to many people there is no place for them to stay. you may not know this, but people rent apartments for yom tov. After yom tov the home owner comes back. Would you like these families to sleep in the streets of Gaza?

I’m sure all those young children and elderly can be very helpful to the idf. maybe my 10 year odl daughters friends should have stayed and gone to the front lines.

  14. Schumer is with Agudah, doing nothing. He’s hanging out in China on Yom Tov, I’m sure he had a beautiful hakafos over there. Agudah was enjoying their Yom Tov instead of being mekayem Hatzalos Nefashos Docheh Kol HAtorah Kulah. Majority of us don’t have much ability in these situations. Agudah has connections, albeit possibly not really just a claim, so they had an achrayos to have meetings on Yom Tov with the Biden administration then. It took what until tuesday. Chutzpah.
