As expected, on schedule, the Knesset a short time passed the Shaked Committee draft bill into law. The plenum session on the bill began on Tuesday 9 Adar II and it was passed into law today, Wednesday, 10 Adar II.
Despite a request from Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu to Bayit Yehudi leader Naftali Bennett not to impose party discipline, Bennett opted to remain loyal of his coalition and not the rabbonim of his party or gedolei yisrael shlita from the chareidi tzibur.
The bill passed as was known it would with one lone opposing vote, Bayit Yehudi’s Yoni Chetboun, who remained true to his Torah hashkafa at the expense of his political career. The opposition is continuing its boycott and the 52 member opposition absented itself from the plenum session vote.
The bill passed in a vote of 67-1 with no abstentions.

Bayit Yehudi, meaning the Religious Zionists (a.k.a. Modern Orthodox) have spoken. If a Jew in Israel chooses to learn Torah rather than serve in the army, they are to be treated as criminals. Their rabbanim and yeshivos will be accessories to the crime. Unless the “rank and file” of the Dati Leumi back down, they have drawn a “line in the sand” not different from those drawn by Shabati Zvi or the followers of you know who over 1900 years ago.
P.S. My prediction is the Dati Leumi will back down or at least will split with the frum parts of the movement staying associated with the Torah world.
Now that both sides have taken completely unrealistic and unreasonable positions, we should daven to Hashem that he grant the people who need to compromise and construct a law that is fair and balanced, meeting the needs of the spiritual and the physical, the wisdom to stop fighting with each other and craft a solution that helps all Yidden not just those with a particular agenda.
Read the history, the dati leumi are like the original founders of Zionism who split away from yiddishkeit, in Europe. history is repeating itself, most if those that were from the original Zionist don’t have a single Jewish descendent.

Everything Hashem does is for the good. Hashem let this law pass so it must be that something good will come of it – perhaps a mass teshuva or kiddush Hashem. These are exciting times…

stop the lie no one is going to jail for learning torah. Are they butting younger than 18 in jail for learning? Or, older people for learning torah in jail? No. all they are asking is that some members of the ultra orthodox pull their weight in the defense of the country they live in.
Lets get real, the gedolem said even those who are not learning should not serve, so it has nothing to do with torah learning, they just feel their community need not serve just get the benefits of those that do.

Swing it how ever way you want. Call it “draft dodging”, call it “jailed for learning”. The fact is that the Bnei Yeshivas will not comply and that will result in arrests.
Under previous conditions some Gedolim allowed enlistment for those not able to learn full time. However, with this new law, the Gedolim came out saying that under these new conditions it is “prohibited for anyone to enlist”.
I gather you weren’t at the Atzeres.

The only reason the gedolim said what they said is a direct result of the war that Lapid and Co. have waged against the chareidi community.
Up until now, not one of the gedolim (except the Eidah haChareidis) ever issued a blanket statement that those who are not learning may not serve. As a matter of fact, Rav Shteinman was originally one of the supporters of the Nachal HaChareidi.
Now, though, Lapid, Bennett, Lipman et al. have turned this into a cultural war, as MK Yoni Chetboun accurately stated.
In essence, this Shaked bill has been rammed down the throats of the Israeli public much in the same way Obamacare was rammed down the throats of the Americans. Without one vote in favor from the opposition. How democratic…

Talk about getting real… The Gedolim only said that when the government insisted on drafting B’nei Yeshivos, to draw a clear line, since many many chilonim are also not serving. But all along they did not say that.
and to say “they just feel their community need not serve just get the benefits of those that do” is pure Kfiira and ignorance. – Even many chilonim admit they benefit tremendously from the Chareidi community. Don’t forget, the chareidim are the ONLY SECTOR that pays more in taxes that it gets back, if you deduct all services and entertainments etc. which we have no use for, and i’m tiered of always listing them all….
#3 I’m trying to understand what you mean by being “realistic” and “compromise”. Are you saying that some should be sent off to the army to be secularized* while the rest should learn Torah would be fair and balanced?

That’s not accurate. Bennet’s Rav is Drukman.

Sad day for Am Yisrael. I fear that this gov’t will see harsh consequences for this great avera and their hate for Torah and charedim.
Now that Lapid got what he wanted – the Draft Law to be passed – then he may not support the Referendum Bill because that goes against his parties hashkafa, which is to negotiate with the Palestinians. Would not be surprised if that happens.
