NOT HAVING IT: DeSantis Says He Will Not Assist With Attempts to Extradite Trump From Florida

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Thursday night that he will do nothing to assist prosecutors extradite Trump from Florida if the former president refuses to go to New York once his indictment is unsealed.

“The weaponization of the legal system to advance a political agenda turns the rule of law on its head,” DeSantis tweeted Thursday. “It is un-American.”

“The Soros-backed Manhattan District Attorney has consistently bent the law to downgrade felonies and to excuse criminal misconduct,” he continued. “Yet, now he is stretching the law to target a political opponent.”

“Florida will not assist in an extradition request given the questionable circumstances at issue with this Soros-backed Manhattan prosecutor and his political agenda.”

The indictment reportedly includes 34 counts relating to the falsification of business records in connection with hush money payments he made during the 2016 presidential election.

  1. DeSantis will not let Trump get all the attention of the right wing press. Does the governor have anything to do with an extradition proceding?

  2. Did this guy really graduate Harvard Law School or did he get a heter to act dumb for political expediency?? As a practical matter, it won’t be an issue since Trump is looking forward to the media circus of an arraignment. He has told his chevrah that there will be more helicopters following his motorcade to the courthouse than OJ Simpson’s white Ford Bronco chase.

  3. Huju, yes, if it came to an extradition, which it will not, Hochul would send the request to Desantis, who would be obliged to hand Trump over. But he could delay and show his resistance by telling Hochul to come back with a court order, and then he could appeal that order directly to the supreme court, invoking original jurisdiction and asking it to overturn Puerto Rico v Branstad and restore the precedent of Kentucky v Dennison that had lasted more than 120 years before being overturned. The court would not take that case, and in the end he’d be forced to comply, but taking it all the way would show his resistance.

But this is all hypothetical. Desantis made his statement knowing full well that he would never be called on to act on it. It was a way of dramatically positioning himself on the obviously correct position that Bragg does not come with clean hands, and his entire investigation is politically motivated and corrupt.
