Israel: Jail Time & a Fine for Egg Smugglers


eggsThe Beersheva Magistrate Court has handed down a two-year prison sentence and 65,000 NIS fine against a city resident found guilty of egg smuggling. The defendant was cited by Ministry of Agriculture inspectors of 34 separate counts of egg smuggling.

All of the eggs that he smuggled or that were found in his procession were from non-approved unsupervised farms and they were transported in unrefrigerated vehicles as required by law. The incidents in question occurred from 2008-2013, and he was found with a total of 288,690 eggs (9,623 flats of 30).

Due to the many occurrences in which he was apprehended and fined, the court took the stern approach in this last case, sending him to prison.

Ministry of Agriculture officials explain the defendant ignored the law and placed customers are risk by selling unsupervised eggs.
