AIPAC Drops Iran Sanctions Bill In Favor Of Senate Letter To Obama

obama aipac.jpgThe American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) is asking its thousands of activists to lobby members of Congress to co-sign a letter to the President outlining what a final deal with Iran must include, instead of asking for a vote on the new Iran sanctions bill.

“Should an acceptable final agreement be reached, your administration will need to work together with Congress to enact implementing legislation to provide longer term sanctions relief beyond existing waiver authorities – either through suspension, repeal or amendment of statutory sanctions,” the letter reads.

The letter is signed by Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman Robert Menendez (D-New Jersey), as well as Senators Chuck Schumer (D-New York), Christopher Coons (D-Delaware), Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), Mark Kirk (R-Illinois) and Kelly Ayotte (R-New Hampshire).

“We believe that Iran has no inherent right to enrichment under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty,” the letter further reads. “We believe any agreement must dismantle Iran’s nuclear weapons program and prevent it from ever having a uranium or plutonium path to a nuclear bomb.”

  1. I think the dropping of the Iran sanctions bill (which adds additional sanctions to an already sanctioned Iran) is a wise course for American supporters of the State of Israel, as it supports the US President’s sensible position and allows the current negotiations to proceed without unnecessary and distracting issues. The US President is the American political authority with primary responsibility for US foreign policy, and supporters of the additional Iran sanctions bill were merely distracting the president and giving his opponents and enemies a political and media vehicle for their incessant and excessive opposition to his administration. As the letter states, current sanctions brought Iran to the bargaining table and achieved a temporary suspension of enrichment activity. If the current negotiations end unsuccessfully, the President and his opponents and enemies can then consider what additional steps the US should take to support its ally Isreal and protect American interests.
