The Jerusalem District Court on Thursday convicted four minors who took part in the 2015 “hate wedding,” in which the participants celebrated an arson attack that killed a Palestinian couple and their toddler, of incitement to violence.
The court’s decision accepted the appeal filed by the State and overturned the decision of the Magistrate’s Court in 2021, which acquitted five minors involved in the case of the charge of incitement. The court left the acquittal of one minor intact due to doubt.
The Honenu legal aid organization responded to the court’s decision by saying: “The court has set us back as a society to a situation in which children who committed a stupid prank at a private wedding stand trial and are convicted at the end of a lengthy legal process, while thousands who distribute candy after terrorist attacks and celebrate in mosques after Jews are murdered roam freely among us.”
Attorney Moshe Pulaski, who represented the defendants, said, “Contrary to the verdict of the lower court, which was shocked by the aggressive enforcement activities taken against the defendants only because of the sector to which they belong, the district court made life easy for itself and decided to convict the minors without delving into the intricacies of the case solely because of their sectoral affiliation.”
”This verdict illustrates once again how much reform is needed in the entire judicial system. The court adopted the prosecution’s premise, even though the lower court rejected it outright.”
In April 2022, the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court convicted the chassan and six guests from the wedding on charges of inciting violence and terror.
