The suspected shooter of an off-duty NYPD Officer in a robbery gone wrong, was arrested on Monday. Randy Jones, was arrested on Monday while hiding at a hotel in Rockland County. Jones was with his girlfriend and her children at the time of the arrest and was transported back to the 75th Precinct in Brooklyn in handcuffs belonging to the critically wounded officer.
Upon arrival at the precinct, Jones retained a lawyer and declined to answer questions from investigators. The wounded officer, a 26-year-old married father of two, remains on life support at Brookdale Hospital.
Jones has a lengthy criminal record with 22 busts including grand larceny, harassment, and strangulation. He was also being sought on a vehicle and traffic warrant dating back to 2019 at the time of his arrest.
The officer and his brother-in-law were carrying $24,000 in cash to purchase a vehicle through Facebook Marketplace when they were ambushed. The suspect pulled a gun and shot the officer in the head, but the officer’s brother-in-law managed to grab the fallen officer’s gun and return fire as the suspect fled the scene in a black BMW SUV.
The SUV was later found abandoned in Harlem, near where the suspect lives with his girlfriend. The BMW belongs to the suspect’s mother who lives in East New York. The NYPD offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the gunman.
The Officer is assigned to the 66 Precinct in Boro Park.
