[COMMUNICATED CONTENT]
In an effort to cut down on the mounds of sweets and candies that get distributed each year on Purim, many people prefer to give – and receive – something meaningful with their traditional mishloach manos. A popular or insightful book is often the perfect “sweet” to include in your package, one that will be appreciated long after the cellophane is unwrapped and discarded.
Israel Bookshop Publications has extended their wonderful “Winter Warehouse Sale” through Monday, March 3rd, the second day of Rosh Chodesh Adar II. Fabulous savings of up to 70%-80% on over 100 titles is now available, thru the end of the day on Monday. Books retailing for $24.95 are now only $6.99 apiece! Mishenichnas Adar, Marbim “B’Savings”….don’t miss out on this once a year event, available here or at participating bookstores.

only problem is that you are not yotzei the mitzvah of mishloach manos with a book!!!
It should be called a purim gift. Shalach manos is only food that can be eaten. Other gifts have nothing to do with mishloach manos.
put in a clause in this, that one isn’t yotzei the mitzva with books, and he/she MUST send the required food package
What about the book “Shulchan Aruch”, where it says that the mitzvah is to give food?
please don’t title that “mishloach manos gifts”. non-edible items are not mishloach manos; just gifts.
These are edible books?
If I give 2 books, does that fulfill the mitzvah, or are they considered the same min? What if I give a regular book and an e-book?
yagel libi, now that’s a good chap, edible books 🙂
Since when does the mitzvah of mishloach manos contain books? Or candy. The mitzvah is food. Why does mishloach manos have to be that expensive? By putting books in your making people who can’t afford them feel bad. People, really think before you do something. The simpler the nicer. Don’t show off. We are in Gulus.
Send food, not gifts. Or send nothing, that’s OK too. I promise that any books I don’t want will go into the trash rather than shemos.
I can give books and still be yotzei??? Great that’s what I will do this year!
@Yagel Libi – When I find a good book, I devour it. 🙂
Perhaps the books they are referring to are cookbooks!
There is nothing wrong with giving sefarim as presents, but that has never been the minhag. And the advertisement makes it appear as if YWN is saying one can do the mitsvos of shlach manos by givng a book, which is clearly not the halacha. In situations where all poskem agree, YWN should not allow an advertiser to suggest doing something that is against halacha.
The ad should read “in addition to giving shlach manos, give a book” – that’s okay. But that isn’t what it said.
As usual, virtually every person who commented did not read the article, where it says “people give a gift WITH their traditional mishloach manos”….
Why not? As a bookworm, I always “devour” books (rimshot).
Send cooked foods that are ready to eat. The opinion of Maharil is that the mitzva is only with cooked foods. WHat could be bad with a roasted beet in mustard leaves!! Yummy and very low in calories.
To -you are right. I did read the article. Just why does book giving have to be mentioned with mishloach manos. It says instead of candy. Which implies candy= books. The article is just written wrong. It should just be a Purim special.
Wow, not bad for a YWN “COMMUNICATED CONTENT”. Bad publicity is still publicity.
