Surprising Meeting: What Did  The Brisker Rosh Yeshivah & HaGaon HaRav Laundau Discuss?

On the background of the ongoing coalition negotiations, a surprising meeting took place recently in Bnei Brak when the Brisker Rosh Yeshivah, HaGaon HaRav Avraham Yehoshua Soloveitchik, went to the home of Rosh Yeshivas Slabodka HaGaon HaRav Dov Landau.

The two Roshei Yeshivah held an hour-long discussion about various issues, including the subject of a new army draft law, B’Chadrei Chareidim reported.

HaRav Soloveitchik told HaRav Landau that apparently the time has come to correct the injustices against the Olam HaTorah by passing a law that would completely exempt lomdei Torah from being drafted into the army.

HaRav Landau responded that it doesn’t appear as if a complete exemption law is shayach but he believes that the Chareidi parties should demand the repassing of the Tal Law, which was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2012, as well as the passing of the “override clause,’ which would prevent the Supreme Court from invalidating the law.

HaRav Landau said that he heard that Agudas Yisrael is working very hard to advance the Tal Law, adding: “How fortunate they and how fortunate is their lot, as they are thereby saving generations of talmudei yeshivos.”

  1. They also discussed the fact that in approx 5 years the Chareidim will be the majority, and there will be hardly anyone else left to fight Israel’s wars for them.
They know that the idea of Non-Chareidy fighting a war to protect Chareidim, will not go on forever.

  2. They probably discussed:-
    1) Hadar Goldin’s body must immediately be returned to his loving parents, and until then, no arabs to be released:- alive or dead
    2) Yigal Amir has served more than enough time, & must be released immediately
    3) In order to upkeep הלכות הכרת הטוב as well as to remove איבה:- Going forwards:- Everyone must observe יום-העצמאות ויום-ירושלים and recite הלל on those 2 days

  3. I second chaimyankel511’s comment. There is no need to rehash the Gedolims’ warnings against the evils of Zionism ר”ל – how they provoked the entire Arab world into hostility against the Yidden and were the cause of Am Yisrael being punished by HaKadosh Baruch Hu with six million Yidden killed during the so-called “Holocaust”.

And if you are more offended by my putting “Holocaust” in quotation marks than your are by the Zionists’ kefira, persecuton of b’nai Torah, and rebellion against HaKadosh Baruch Hu השם ירחם, then that just proves that you care more about Zionism than you do about Torah UMitzvos. Rachmana Litzlon!!

  4. @ader; You probably heard about the spiel of zionists about 100 years ago when they mocked the parsha in Shoftim calling people who just married, bought a new home or vineyard and finally are afraid to go home and only 3 elderly gedolim we left… – what was the response of the gedolim? They were right but left out an important detail: THE WON THE WAR!

  5. There is no need to respect the opinion of anyone who does not respect Da’as Torah as to what is important and what isn’t.

  6. Yossi was just saying what Rav Avigdor Miller Zatzal said that the holocaust was a oinesh for all the “isms” which obviously includes in the forefront “Zionnism”.
Is he also R”L a disgrace? YOU are takehmammesh an utter disgrace!!

  7. pffft. all the anti-Israel “chareidi” smarty-pants comments from above…

keep living in a delusion thinking that you are serving Hashem and following Yiddishkeit properly all of you nincompoops, and keep following your anti-zionist chareidi עבודה זרה…

    ברוך שלא עשני נטורי קרתא

  8. Who said anything about Neturei Kartah? Because they are crazy that means the Tziyonim are right? Was Rav Avigdor Miller and Brisker Rav also delusional? How about the Chazon Ish?

  9. And to 147 there are no chiyuvim of hakaras hatov to poishei yisroel. And the dinim of aivah only refer to goyim. You are nebach a fat am haarotz!

  10. “Exempt lomdei Torah from being drafted into the army”? This is the most un-Jewish shirking of the duty to stand up for our fellow Jews. In Hilchos Shabbos 3:23, the Rambam states that it is a MITZVAH for all Jews who are able to come and help defend their brethren against their enemies. He paskens that Jewish self-defense supersedes Shabbos! For goodness’ sake, the Chashmona’im fought for the Jewish People for decades against the Seleucids – and they were kohanim!

  11. lemaaseh it”s about time some of the talmeidei Chachamim starting to reawaken to the real problems that affect the chariedem instead of davening to kupat hair and all other ע”ז רח”ל

  12. Ari Knobler, what you wrote is pure amhoratzus. Not only the Rambam paskens, but it is an explicit gemara, that talmidei chachomim are exempt from military service and that it is a huge sin, for which a country will be punished, if they draft them. King Asa was punished with gout for this sin.

The gemara also says talmidei chachomim are not only exempt from the draft, but they are also exempt from paying taxes for security, because their torah protects them so they don’t need any security measures. That is an explicit gemara, halacha lema’aseh, so it is not up for debate; we are required to accept it as true.

  13. yes and every random shmoe in yerushalayim who wears a flimsy hat and has freckles on his face and smokes is a “talmid chachom”, so they don’t have to learn how to shoot or hold a gun to defend the country…

the PROPER reason to be against the IDF draft of yeshivish people in Israel is not because it is “assur” to stop learning in order to join the army or whatever (like some chareidim are saying) and not because the “evil zionists” are trying to make us all not Frum and forget the torah (like other chareidim are saying) but rather because the current attitudes & culture/mindset of the IDF is too secular and not-tznius for a frum person to be in. staying in a place like that for too long can mess with one’s neshamah in a negative way; this is why yeshiva guys should refuse the IDF draft

עס איז נישט א הייליקע סביבה און נישט פאסיק פאר א יידישע נשמה דארט צו בלייבן

    this is the only reason.

(of course if you are especially gifted like rav chaim for instance then of course you shouldn’t join either, because you are much better off spending all your time studying torah – but this measure is reserved for the ELITE & torah scholars, not for every random yeshiva bochur…)
