A motor malfunction on board a boat transporting calves and sheep from Australia to Israel led to the deaths of at least 840 sheep. The Ocean Drover was heading to Israel carrying 42,000 sheep and 6,000 calves intended for Israel, the PA (Palestinian Authority) and Jordan.
An engine malfunction was already detected two weeks ago, slowing the vessel down, but it was able to continue towards Israel following repairs. It appears the deaths were the result of prolonged delays, causing the animals to become ill or injured. In such cases in the past, dead animals are thrown overboard.
This is the third incident of malfunction on vessels carrying live animals from Australia to Israel in recent months and Australian officials have launched an investigation.
The animal rights organization “Anonymous” is calling to stop shipments of live animals from Australia to Israel, citing the process is cruel and abusive for the animals.
