On Chol Hamoed Sukkos, HaRav Avraham Yeshayahu Kanievsky, the Rosh Kollel of Orchos Yosher and the oldest son of HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanivesky, ztl, visited Rosh Yeshivas Slabodka, HaGaon HaRav Dov Landau.
The two spent a long time discussing divrei Torah and halacha. One of the topics was the Chazon Ish’s tzizis, which HaRav Kanivesky, as his great-nephew, has in his possession and brought with him to show HaRav Landua.
HaRav Landua was moved by the sight and exclaimed over the buttons that were sewed to the tzitzis at the Chazon Ish’s request, adding that not only is it moving to see the tzitzis but one can also learn halacha l’maaseh from them.

What are the buttons for? Do they contribute to the שם בגד? Rav Avrohom Yeshayahu said that the Chazon Ish ztz”l never used them.
In the video, Harav Kanievsky tells Harav Landau that the Chazon Ish never used the buttons.
Also interesting to note that the language between the two gedolim is Hebrew. Is there any real doubt that most Jews, and even most frum Jews, speak Hebrew as their first language?

The buttons have one purpose: to add to the שיעור בגד. There’s is a Machlokes ha’Poskim regarding the top slit if it can be applied toward the necessary שיעור , having buttons gives it a status of a full שיעור בגד regarding Chiyuv Tzizis deOraisa.
Note: some in Brisk also wear a Beged with buttons.
