MK Meir Porush Meets with PM Netanyahu

porMK (Yahadut Hatorah) Rav Meir Porush on Monday afternoon, 3 Adar I 5774 met with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to discuss the new chareidi draft law. Just last week colleague MK Rav Yaakov Litzman announced that he would not meet with the prime minister, adding gedolei yisrael have instructed it is prohibited to meet with the prime minister.

The prime minister has been making an effort to meet with chareidi lawmakers, a move some feel may signal his desire to rid himself of the Yesh Atid party and bring the chareidim into the coalition government.

The prime minister has also recently met with MK Rav Moshe Gafne, who like Porush does not agree with Litzman’s hashkafa of boycotting the prime minister.

  2. As long as the minimum frum demand is a broad exemption from military service for yeshiva students, and as long as the Likud is supporting a policy that demands that most yeshiva students be conscripted – there isn’t much to talk about. The fact is that the rank and file of Likud is also anti-hareidi. One can negotiate about matters such as funding yeshivos of welfare policies – but the demand to stop learning in order to be a soldier is non-negotiable, from both sides. There is no common ground.

The only solution that might make it possible for a hareidi party to join the government is to abolish conscription, perhaps with a Basic law (constitutional amendment) that could also authorize giving financial incentives and veterans benefits (now banned as being discirminatory) to induce enlistment.
