Israel: Yossi Eggs Fined 1 Million NIS for Selling Prohibited Eggs

eggsSome shoppers have been wondering what happened to Yossi Eggs when looking to purchase eggs in their local store. The company generally sells about 10 million eggs monthly, holding 8% of the national market.

It appears the owners were arrested and indicted for selling prohibited eggs, unapproved eggs smuggled into Israel from PA (Palestinian Authority) area that were not approved by veterinary officials. They owners were fined 1 million NIS and their license to sell eggs has been revoked as a result of the conviction and sentencing by the court.

The owners were indicted after agents of the Ministry of Agriculture built its case against them. The company in 2011-2012 sold smuggled PA eggs to the general Israeli marketplace. The court cited the owners knowingly and deliberately endangered the health of the public to earn an easy profit and that is why no leniency was shown.

It is pointed out that their profits were increased by at least 300% by selling the prohibited eggs which do not have added costs of monitoring by health and state agencies and those eggs are not subject to scrutinizing testing to ensure the safety of the public.
