There is a ray of optimism as רפאל יצחק אייזיק בן מיכל opened his eyes in an ICU in Schneider Children’s Hospital and was able to communicate with doctors. According to a Ynet report, this occurred on Shabbos after doctors brought reduced the medication keeping him in a medically induced coma and connected to ECMO unit. Doctors asked him if he wanted a candy and he communicated he did.
Doctors point out however that despite the encouraging sign, the children, Refael and his brother חיים מיכאל remain in serious condition and the boys are far from being out of the life-threatening danger. Doctors add that when he is not in the medically induced coma he does hear but he did not speak or communicate definitively. When asked if he wants something he blinks his eyes, adding “this is far from seeing light at the end of the tunnel”.
Speaking to Kol Berama Radio on Sunday morning, 25 Shevat, R’ Shimie Gross explained that both his sons have responded to vocal stimulus B”H by squeezing his hand.

Not a week goes by that we don’t hear of a child dying–just look at the Misaskim site. This past week was just horrendous –with the gas explosion, with the exterminating products, with the 15 year old bachur who went into cardiac arrest for no reason–week after week. Let’s ask ourselves in all honesty–what are we doing that is causing our children to be our kaporos? One answer is–STOP TALKING IN SHUL !!!!! look at sefarim that show how much damage we do to our children by talking in shul–by davening–by krias Hatorah–turn off the cell phones!!!! What did you do in the days before there were cell phones, for goodness sake!! Each one of us has to start to something small. No lashon hara for an hour–cell phones are just adding to it. I see people taking their children in baby carriages at 8:30 in the morning to day care and parents are on the phone crossing streets without looking. What happened to the days when you NEVER called someone before 9 in the morning unless it was an emergency. Give a dollar tzedakah bi’Sever Panim Yafos to someone. Make a bracha out loud so someone can answer Omein. Wash for Hamotzie, bentch right after so you don’t forget. AND most of all DON’T TALK IN SHUL–can’t it wait a little longer? Unless you’re a doctor, there is no reason to be on a cell phone. I see men standing outside various shuls/shteiblech with their talleisim AND tefillin on with cell phone in hand–what a boosha for the talis and tefillin. It’s very nice that they go outside to talk not to disturb their fellow daveners, but why do you need to be on the phone with your talis an tefilin on? PLEASE–we all have the power to stop making our children the karbonos.–Brooklyn Mommy, Bubby and daughter
