The Republican National Committee is largely getting out of the business of underwriting state parties and television ads.
Instead, the RNC will focus on rebuilding its database that tracks each voter and will leave it to others to convince those individuals to support GOP candidates.
Senior RNC officials said Tuesday that the central committee’s role ahead of 2014’s midterm elections would be mostly behind-the-scenes. The high-profile job of running ads would fall to allied committees and like-minded super PACs.
Five officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to discuss the matter by name.
The shift away from state-based aid is significant. During the 2010 midterm elections, the RNC sent $13 million to state parties. In 2006, it sent almost $57 million to state parties.
