Last week, Eliya Haliwa, the Lebanese man who was “exposed” as a non-Jew after marrying a Syrian Jewish girl from Brooklyn but then turned out to actually be Jewish, appeared before the Beis Din in Israel last week, Kikar H’Shabbat reported.
Haliwa, who moved to Israel at the end of April, told the Beis Din that not only was he born a Jew but in the wake of the storm after his marriage, he was megayeir l’chumrah.
A source told Kikar that the Beis Din suggested to Haliwa to grant his wife a get l’chumra, just in case he was Jewish at the time of the wedding. Haliwa refused to do so, saying that he was definitely a Jew all along and he only was megayeir l’chumrah. Also, he said that his wife has agreed to remain married to him if he can prove he is a Jew.
The Beis Din offered Haliwa two options, to grant his wife a get, as was initially suggested. The second option, assuming that his wife is willing, is to remarry his wife in order to verify the kiddushin.

What is this paragraph trying to say
Who are the dayanim? Are they reliable?
Why are we giving this guy the attention he craves? Also I highly doubt she wants to take him back even if he really is Jewish…he’s probably deluding himself and making her am agunah
This article fails to clarify why he even went in front of a Beis din in the first place…
Wow – big moment.
This will be a huge test for Eliya – if his wife sadly wants to divorce after everything that has transpired, I hope Eliya gets the strength to be humble enough to accept this and Hashem helps him to remarry easily and speedily; if she wants to stay with him I wish them only happiness and blessings – this will be a tremendous joy. Until now Eliya and his wife have been sad victims of a sorry tale – I completely understand if their marriage doesn’t survive this pressure – whose would?? They will both walk away sad but proud with their integrity in tact. At the same time if they do stick through with it then they will certainly receive siyata d’shmayia and crazy blessings and respect worldwide. The worst scenario cvS is if one side wants a divorce and the other refuses and isn’t smart about it. This would cvS be a game changer. We should all pray for them that they have an easy few months and years ahead, whatever they decide independently and together, and that there is only revealed good moving forward.
My husband said this twist sounds a little like today’s Daf.
Eliyah told me he moved to Israel 3 days before pesach along with his wife
Since when does a Beis Din publicize the decision, and thereby humiliate the parties. That is what the goyim do. Unlike their form court reporters, our “Shailos and Tseuvos” do not reveal identifying details of the litigants.
