RCA Deplores NY Post Headline in Stark Murder

starkThe Rabbinical Council of America, the largest Orthodox rabbinic association in America, strongly condemns the headline in the Sunday January 5, 2014 edition of the New York Post. In reporting on the kidnapping and gruesome murder of Menachem Stark, a Chassidic businessman who leaves behind a grieving wife and eight young children, the tabloid printed a headline that was as unacceptable and objectionable as it was inflammatory and provocative.

The headline, “Who Did Not Want Him Dead?”, crossed the line of all human decency and implied justification of the victim’s murder, violating the most basic tenets of ethical journalism.

We extend our condolences to the Stark family, and pray that this outrageous example of sensationalist journalism does not add to the pain of their loss.

We call upon the Post to issue a full apology.

  1. Kudos to YWN THE ONLY FRUM SITE TGAT DID NOT QUOTE tge nypost today all the other ones made a ton of noise yesterday to boycott the post and today they quote it quite openly . SHAME IN THEM WHAT A JOKE!!!!

  2. another jewish organization jumping on the banwagon to blast the post. The post is ancillary to the real issue, which is how have gotten to this point. Jewish leadership is non existent and everything is all about the holy dolar. And so as long as you give to jewish institutions you are a tzadik, but not one jewish leader has stated that we should be training our children to deal in an ethical fashion in business dealings, and we should state unequivaically that bad morals and ethics have bad outcomes, but that would compromise financial stability for the yeshivos and mosdos and so we allow people to get themselves into trouble with no way out. Son we can blame the post from now to the cows come home, but what about us as a people have we looked at that lately

  3. The New York Post has been a disgrace since it was acquired by Rupert Murdoch more than 20 years ago. The treatment of Menachem Stark is consistent with the Post’s treatment of many people, and consistent with its preference for sensationalism over accuracy. The Post should apologize to the family of Mr. Stark, and then continue apologizing to every one of its victims whose personal tragedies were sensationalized by the Post.

Early in Mr. Murdoch’s ownership of the Post, the Post set its standard with the infamous headline that read, more or less: “Headless Torso Found in Topless Bar.” That is the kind of inhumanity that has characterized the Post for years, and its heinous treatment of Mr. Stark’s murder is a continuation of the Post’s long-standing practice.
