Catskills: Liberty Residents Protest Planning of New Development

hous.jpgThe following are excerpts of an article appearing in today’s Times Herald Record, and is about the local residents in the town of Liberty, NY complaining about development being planned in their town.

A Brooklyn developer is pitching a large seasonal condo development in the village of Liberty – and that’s already riled up residents.

A firm known has submitted a preliminary plan for 142 units, a synagogue and some amenities, like a pool and parking, on 70.56 acres on North End Avenue.

About 50 people packed Village Hall to listen to the proposal during a joint hearing between the Town and Village boards.

Residents expressed concerns that such a large development would overwhelm the fire department and create traffic and other problems.

“That would be quite a big development,” said Nicholas Piatek, who leads a bicycle group called libertybiketrail. “It could be anything from houses to condos like Kiryas Joel, and we are concerned about the trails and impact and the destruction of the natural habitat.”

Attorney Jay Zeiger, who represents the developer, says the developer would probably build condos, but won’t proceed unless the Town and Village boards agree to annex the land into the village, so the developer could make use of village water and sewer.

Zeiger said the developer would pay to upgrade the water and sewer systems and also build the roads, which would be private.

He noted that this would generate lots of tax revenue for the village and school district without burdening the schools with extra students. “This is a seasonal residence,” he said.

  1. I know attorney Jay Zeiger from previous deals. He makes his business almost exclusively from Jewish developers and from colonies seeking to go coop. He knows all the shtick, and has dealt with all kinds והמבין יבין.
