UK PM Boris Johnson’s Visit to India- Highlights


British Prime Minister Boris Johnson landed in Ahmedabad city of Gujarat state in India. His two-day India visit began on April 21, 2022. Gujarat state Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, along with Governor and other officials, welcomed PM Boris at the Ahmedabad airport.

Johnson was extremely delighted with the grand welcome he received in India. He quoted during his speech, “I felt like Sachin Tendulkar upon my arrival and like Amitabh Bacchan when I saw hoardings everywhere”.

Day 1- Highlights

On the first day of his to India, PM Boris went to Mahatma Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram. Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel accompanied him to the Ashram and tried to spin the Chakra.

Johnson also penned a note at the Ashram, which said, “It is an immense privilege to come to the ashram of this extraordinary man, and to understand how he mobilised such simple principles of truth and non-violence to change the world for the better”.

He then went to the Adani Headquarters in Ahmedabad to meet Gautam Adani, founder of Adani Group and billionaire industrialist. The duo discussed the business opportunities.

Gautam Adani later tweeted highlighting the meeting details- “Honoured to host Boris Johnson, the first UK PM to visit Gujarat, at Adani HQ. Delighted to support climate & sustainability agenda with a focus on renewables, green H2 & new energy. Will also work with UK companies to co-create defence & aerospace technologies”.

Next, he went to a newly-established factory that focused on manufacturing machines and other equipment. The factory is in Halol, near Vadodara, which a UK-based JCB Company established.

Later, PM Boris visited Akshardham temple and Biotechnology University in Gandhinagar.

Day 2- Highlights

On day 2 of Johnson’s India tour, he travelled to the capital city New Delhi to meet India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. The duo discussed various productive sectors to maintain the India-UK friendship.

The talks included sectors like commerce, trade, defence and clean energy. The negotiations for Free Trade Agreement also took place, and PM Boris was told to conclude the deal by Diwali.

PM Modi invited the UK to join India’s National Hydrogen Mission. It is aimed to help the Indian Government cater to its climate targets by producing green energy.

UK PM also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi by visiting Rajghat in New Delhi.
