Stop-Work Orders Reportedly On The Rise

The city reportedly is shutting down more construction sites — especially outside Manhattan.

According to the Daily News, the Department of Buildings issued more than 5,900 stop-work orders between January 1st and June 15th — an increase of nearly 45 percent over the same period last year.

Most of the shutdowns were in Queens, which saw a jump of more than 67 percent — with 2,275 stop-work orders issued. Brooklyn was next, with a jump of nearly 66 percent.

The Bronx was the only borough where the number of stop-work orders actually fell.

But a Buildings spokesman told the News that’s because there were fewer applications, complaints, and permits in the Bronx.

Stop-work orders can be issued for a number of violations, like working without a permit and not following the city’s Building Code.
