Israel: Jerusalem Chareidim Say “No” to Arab Cab Drivers

monit.jpgYerushalayim’s chareidi community has stepped up efforts to avoid giving a livelihood of Arabs, posting signs around the city calling on travelers to avoid taking Arab-driven cabs. They are also calling on chareidim to avoid using taxis from companies employing Arab drivers.

Similar calls are being heard in Merkaz HaRav Yeshiva following the March terror attack, Ladaat reports.

It appears following last week’s bulldozer terror attack in Yerushalayim, the chareidi community if renewing efforts to avoid giving work to Arabs, a momentum that began in force following the attack in Merkaz HaRav which claimed the lives of eight students.

  2. now lets hear from those “love your enemies who are out to slaughter you” guys, nitwits and hear them say ..”we’re becoming like them”, “we’re doing what the germans did to us in the 30’s”

  3. RABBI KOOK ALSO SAID NOT TI HIRE ARABS …THAT WAS RIGHT BEFORE THE CHEVRON YESHIVA RAID . WHEN WILL WE UNDERSTAND THAT WE ARE JUST ONE SHEEP AMONGST 70 WOLVES ? ONLY HASHEM CAN COME AND SAVE US .IN THE MEAN TIME WE MUST HUMBLE OURSELVES AND DO WHAT YAKOV AVINU DID WHAEN DEALING WITH THE NATIONS .1) PRAY 2) SEND GIFTS AND BRIBES 3) PREPARE ESCAPE ROUTES .SEE THE RANBAN IN VAYISLACH

  4. To Number three there is no choice but to buy their produce as It’s shemmita. what will people do erev Shabbos take a jewish cab??

  5. It’s about time! How stupid have we been all along??? They want to kill every one of us and we support them too??? Let the cab drivers come out and condemn & disown the policies of the Palestinians and then we’ll see! It’s just unreal how WE support and fund their terror….thanks for taking a step in the right direction for a change!

  6. to #7 “ulemilchomo” does not mean “escape routes”, “v’hoya hamachne hanishar liflato” is not the interpetation of “ulimchanmo”.and the ramban doesnt say otherwise..

  7. NeveAliza [9],
    you missed the boat.
the old call by the far right was driven by nationalizm, and was called at a time when they were not dangereouse but full of fear. the far right succeeded in antagenizing the Arabs in many other ways as well, as we all know. The Gedolim’s call a few months ago is mearly out of concern for Pikuach Nefesh.

  8. way to go, boycott all the arabs!
Too much good never comes out when becoming too friendly with the enemy.
Reminds me of all those “Poilishe goyte” stories, where they were thought to be ‘so nice’ only to be told at the airport, on the way back to Poland that “see u in auschwitz” or some other antisemitic curse.

  9. This is, unfortunately, wishful thinking. The signs may be up, but a simple walk down the street in Meah Shearim will show you at least 50 Arab workers right on the street, doing construction on yeshivas and other buildings (example – the new Toldos Aharon yeshiva seems to be all Arab labor). The corner in the middle of the main street is a regular gathering place for 10-20 Arabs to get temporary day work.

On the other side of Meah Shearim (Shiftei Yisroel), another 5-30 Arabs gather daily in front of the neighborhood hardware store for the same purpose.

The community is still hiring, and unwilling to pay a wage for avodat ivrit – Jewish labor.

This even though those groups of Arabs are known to sometimes harass charedi pedestrians, “forcably” extracting tzedakah (through intimidation and mild physical contact – ie extortion).

Not limited to Meah Shearim, most construction work is Arab, Jews with skills simply can’t get work (they won’t take the low low pay the Arabs will). NOT the contractor, the workers, the contractor is usually Jewish and usually Charedi.

  10. I usually order taxis of the ‘Jewish’ companies, such as Bar Ilan, Ramot Alon, or Givat Shaul. But not out of ideology – just because I have their numbers saved in my cellphone.

If I’m really in a hurry I don’t really care and I take the first one that I can get, of course.

And I’d actually rather prefer an Arab driver over a Jewish driver who works on Shabbos.

Besides, I don’t know who you are talking about with “Jerusalem Chareidim”. Not the tzibbur of the Edah, for sure. We try to keep the sholosh shevuos, you know, things such as avoiding hisgarus be’umos…

  11. to # 1 get an education b4 u post and waste our time——————————————————————————–

Comment by donjac u make no sense

In the USA this would be discrimination and profiling. In Eretz Yisroel it is called common sense and life saving safety
