BIDEN REJECTS TRUMP PRIVILEGE: Orders Release of Trump White House Logs to Congress

President Joe Biden is ordering the release of Trump White House visitor logs to the House committee investigating the riot of Jan. 6, 2021, once more rejecting former President Donald Trump’s claims of executive privilege.

The committee has sought a trove of data from the National Archives, including presidential records that Trump had fought to keep private. The records being released to Congress are visitor logs showing appointment information for individuals who allowed to enter the White House on the the day of the insurrection.

In a letter sent Monday to the National Archives, White House counsel Dana Remus said Biden had considered Trump’s claim that because he was president at the time of the attack on the U.S. Capitol, the records should remain private, but decided that it was “not in the best interest of the United States” to do so.

The committee is focused on Trump’s actions from Jan. 6, when he waited hours to tell his supporters to stop the violence and leave the Capitol. Investigators are also interested in the organization and financing of a Washington rally the morning of the riot, when Trump told supporters to “fight like hell.” Among the unanswered questions is how close organizers of the rally coordinated with White House officials.

  1. The courts have already decided the issue that the ” executive privilege”, to the extent it exists, attaches to the office of the executive (not the person) and in virtually all cases can be exercised by the current occuapnt of the executive office of the president. Historically, the current occupant “consulted” with his predecessors but that was more a courtesy. In some rare cases, where attorney client privileges are implicated, there might be circumstances where the privileges overlap and have to be sorted out but otherwise, with white house visitor and call logs, its now settled law. Game over. Trump can tell his acolytes to “fight like hell” (a phrase he used in his “perfect” and “totally loving” speech on the mall prior to the January 6th riots, but all those records are likely already in the hands of the Congressional investigators.

  2. If Trump did nothing wrong he shouldn’t have any problem is the release of the White House logs. After all he was an employee of we the people and the logs should be available to all.

  3. Looking forward to 3 years from now, when the newly elected Republican president opens up all of Biden’s private logs to the public. What comes around goes around.

  4. Ukraine didn’t work, so back to Trump!

Lostspark: Perhaps you need to read the story. It was Trump who initiated this non-event by requesting the documents be withheld under a bizarre assertion of executive privilege. Visitor logs had always been made public by prior administrations after 30 days and are made public currently. Only Trump tried to keep them confidential as falling within some non-existent privilege. It Trump would simply follow prior court orders there would be no story. If Trump keeps asking stupid questions, the Courts will keep swatting him down and saying “NO”.

  5. Biden did not initiate this issue. If Trump keeps asking stupid questions or asserting non-existent privileges(aka Can I withhold the name of the plumber we called to unclog the toilets in the President’s bedroom?) then the Courts will keep swatting him down and saying “NO”)

  6. The ex president’s life has been one of immorality, dishonesty and conning. His accounting firm has confirmed his dishonesty. His illegal destruction of memos etc is far worse than anything Hillary was accused of with her server. Just a small sampling of his culpability.

  7. Let’s not lose sight, it’s the gang in the White House talking in Bidens name. Biden isn’t capable of this Scared as hell that Trump will be reelected they’re looking for anything they can find. They keep on bringing up Jan. 6 hoping it’ll help them. This is what they hope will work for them. It won’t. Let Biden pass a cognitive test. He can’t.

  8. “I REMEMBER when joe was VP, and those logs under Obama were…well privileged..”

jdf007: You are obviously in the early stages of memory loss. What are you talking about?? The Obama White House released monthly visitor logs on an ongoing basis 30 days after the end of each calendar month. I can’t post the link but if you google “Obama white house archives” and search under “visitor records” you will find those logs for his eight years in office.
Trump is the first president in modern history to withhold such logs as a “national security” concern.

  9. The documents are government property, not personal property, and the privilege belongs to the “president” no matter who that is. Trump should have not conducted personal business at the White House.
